Social Studies in Colorado
Over the past four years the Colorado Department of Education has been improving and developing their Social Studies standards, assessments, and recommended curriculum. This is an exciting time for Social Studies as we move away from rote memorization to more advanced thinking that still includes a deep understanding of content, but also integrates relevant 21st century concepts and skills, with an emphasis on literacy. Colorado Social Studies students are learning how to link the past to the present, and how to evaluate various forms of information for bias, accuracy, and point of view. Whether you're in Delta or Denver the enduring understandings and essentials questions that are being taught should be the same... we are creating thoughtful, engaged citizens.
KIPP Montbello CurriculumWe will be using Colorado standards and KIPP AIMS (objectives) to create a rigorous Social Studies curriculum that is also relevant to the lives of our KIPPsters. I will be integrating some of my previous ideas and knowledge from the curriculum work I participated in at Delta Middle School.
